Salix alba var. vitellina

Salix alba var. vitellina also known as Golden Willow, is a stunning medium-sized deciduous tree that can also be cultivated as a multi-stemmed shrub. This variety is renowned for its brilliant golden-yellow stems, which provide exceptional winter interest and add vibrant colour to any landscape.

Key Features and uses:

  • Brilliant Stems: The eye-catching golden-yellow stems are particularly striking in winter, creating a vivid contrast against the bare landscape.
  • Seasonal Foliage: In spring and summer, the willow showcases narrow, lance-shaped, finely toothed leaves that turn yellow in the fall. These leaves drop to reveal the spectacular stems underneath.
  • Catkins: Produces large, showy yellow catkins that enhance its visual appeal.
  • Growth and Size: Grows rapidly, reaching heights of 6-30 feet (2-9 meters) and spreads of 5-25 feet (1.5-7.5 meters). It can produce 6-8 feet (180-240 cm) of new growth annually.
  • Landscape Applications: Ideal for shrub borders, informal hedges, privacy screens, and erosion control. Perfect for coastal gardens, planting along streams or ponds, and adding winter interest.
  • Floristry: The vibrant stems make it an excellent choice for adding a splash of colour to floral arrangements.

Growth & Care:

  • Sunlight: Thrives in full sun to part shade.
  • Soil: Prefers average, moist, well-drained soils but adapts well to various soil types as long as they are kept evenly moist.
  • Maintenance: Easy to grow, maintain, and is deer resistant. To maintain optimal winter colour, consider cutting the stems back to the ground every early spring as the leaf buds begin to swell. Alternatively, prune one-third to one-half of the oldest stems each spring to encourage new growth and maintain the plant's shape.
  • Monitoring: Keep an eye out for pests such as aphids, caterpillars, leaf beetles, Japanese beetle, sawflies, and rust diseases.
