This exceptional fleece comes from an Icelandic ewe raised in the UK, part of a breed that traces its roots back to Iceland, where it developed over 1,100 years in near-total isolation. First brought to the island by Viking settlers in the 9th century, Icelandic sheep have remained genetically distinct ever since, making them one of the purest and most ancient livestock breeds in the world.
All Icelandic sheep in North America today descend from just two legendary importations, led by Stefania and Ray of Ontario. These were carefully managed but daring efforts—the kind of wild, paperwork-laden, quarantine-filled adventures only true breed stewards would attempt. Thanks to their persistence and vision, this rare heritage breed now has a foothold in Canada.
This fleece is extra large, with beautifully defined, wavy locks and a captivating blend of silvery grey and soft charcoal, enhanced by a striking blue undertone that adds unique depth and character to the piece. The fleece’s natural texture and coloring make it both elegant and grounding.
This is a vegetarian fleece, sheared humanely and without harm. It is backed with 100% Merino wool, giving it a soft, natural, and cozy finish throughout.
By purchasing this fleece, you’re directly supporting small-scale conservation farming and helping to preserve the legacy of the Icelandic breed in Canada.
